About

Our Mission

To teach the art of dressage, combined with superior horsemanship, to create a harmonious balance between human and horse.

New Balance Training is centered around safety and solid horsemanship. Horsemanship goes far beyond riding alone and the relationship between horse and rider is built on a foundation of trust, confidence, and respect. Jennifer O’Brien, owner and trainer, strives to help each horse and rider be physically, mentally, and emotionally connected to create a willing partnership. The smallest try is always rewarded, and the horse’s well being always comes first.

“John Lyons, well-respected trainer, said it best, ‘there are only two emotions that belong in the saddle; one is a sense of humor and the other is patience.’ You’ll find both in use at New Balance Training.” - Jennifer O’Brien

Jennifer O’Brien

Jen grew up riding horses on the beach in Ocean Shores, Washington. She was guided by Nancy Fellows, joining Pony Club and 4-H and ultimately earning a state championship. Jen began riding dressage at age 16 with Kari McClain, a well known and respected horsewoman in the Pacific Northwest, after being drawn to the rhythmic nature of dressage. She has competed up to 4th level and continues to further her own education. Jen actively rides in clinics and symposiums, with her most recent rides with clinicians Ulf Wadeborn, Karen Pavicic, Kathleen Raine, Cindy Ishoy, Heather Bender, and Dominique Barbier.

Jen strives to create harmony between horse and rider to develop the horse’s athleticism, engage their mind, and strengthen their natural gaits. Not only has she developed a positive reputation for her training and techniques, but also for her guidance and expertise in teaching amateurs and pros alike. There is no doubt that Jen has strong passions for both the sport and the animal, and this can be seen in every interaction with horse and rider.
